Pepsi Pinas TVC goes viral!

Pepsi Pinas launches prematurely online before its TV break with it's action-movie-inspired flick entitled "Sa Aking Ang Pinas" posted on their new YouTube channel.

BBDO Guerrero does it again with a great idea that connects with the general Filipino audience -- cliche Filipino action movie lines. Meant to be a TV commercial, the material begged to find its full 2-minute version online, where the typical 30-second TV spot made it prohibitive to air on very tight budgets.

If you haven't seen it ging viral on Facebook or Twitter, here it is for your enjoyment:

Lessons learned:
1. A true big idea travels beyond TV, thru the whole marketing mix including digital.
2. A great story does go viral, gaining more than 4,000 likes on Facebook in half a day, without the benefit of online display ads.
3. It pays to have clients who trust on gut feel and the guts to execute it.

It's so mushy, it's great. Enjoy.

Great storytelling in a TV ad -- a must see!

I just love the musical scoring and great storytelling of this Thai ad for Pantene. It's the August Rush story told in 4 minutes:

And I love how the product takes a backseat, yet totally connects at the end. You know they inserted all those hair flinging shots towards the end for the product, but you just don't care because of a story well-told. And it doesn't matter if it's in Thai because it's subtitled anyway because of the sign language; and it's the musical scoring that drives the story. Perfect.

I think this is the direction TV commercials should evolve: Longer video formats that can become viral online, while telling great stories.

Essential of a Viral Video (From AdAge Digital)

Ad Age talks about the elements of a successful viral campaign. In a nutshell, Martin Lindstrom, former global COO of British Telecom/LookSmart, a former BBDO executive and the author of the books "Buyology," "BrandSense," BrandChild," "Brand Building on the Internet" and "Clicks, Bricks & Brands," talk about the 3 key elements:
  1. Talk value: The viral needs to have something that will make people talk about it to others.
  2. Sensational: The viral needs to do something never been done before, and NOT fit for regular TV viewing.
  3. Soap: To have a successful viral campaign, you can't have a one-hit-wonder. The idea has to travel several videos.
